Steps to register as an Apprentice in Alberta

See the “How do I Get Started?” page on the Alberta Apprenticeship and Industry Training website:

To become an apprentice in the province of Alberta you will need to be employed by someone who is a licensed journeyman in the trade you are looking to apprentice in.

  1. The first step is to find an employer who is interested in – and able to – take on an apprentice. There are many factors that influence whether an employer is able to take on apprentices at any given time.
  2. If you are already working in an industry where you would like to move into an apprenticeship position, meet with your employer to ask them if they are able to take you on as an apprentice.
  3. Once you have found an employer who is willing to take you on as an apprentice, you can then proceed with the application.
    • Obtain the employer’s (or designate) contact email. You will need this for the online application through Alberta Apprenticeship and Industry Training.
    • Go to this website: http://tradesecrets.alberta.ca/mytradesecrets/applying-for-ait-programs-and-services-online/ and start a New Application
    • Follow the steps outlined on the site. The first step will be to set up an account. You will need your Alberta Student Number (ASN) for this. Here is the link to the Alberta Learner Registry site that shares information on how to obtain your ASN: https://learnerregistry.ae.alberta.ca/                                      CBe-learn Student Services can help you find this number if you are enrolled with us in any of our courses.
    • There is an application fee. It may be paid online during the application process, or may be paid in person at the local Apprenticeship and Industry Training office.
  4. After you have completed the application online, a link will be sent to your employer to fill out their part of the contract.
